Foreign ministry says stop false news (2)

'Offensive, defamatory' reports

Redazione Ansa

(ANSA) - Rome, December 1 - The Italian foreign ministry on Thursday called a halt to what it called offensive and defamatory reports that it was trying to help the Yes campaign in Sunday's Constitutional reform referendum. The foreign ministry, it said in a statement, stressed the "professionalism and absolute impartiality" of the consular-diplomatic network working on votes from Italians abroad. It warned against publishing false news, saying the media had carried groundless reports including a document, which it categorically denied, urging the network into a "general mobilisation for the Yes".
Italy votes Sunday on the government's overhaul of the country's political machinery, which aims to end gridlock by making it faster and cheaper to pass laws.
