Govt shd continue if referendum No (2)

'Last judgement' only at general election

(ANSA) - Rome, September 28 - The government should carry on even if it loses a December 4 referendum on its overhaul of Italy's political machinery, Interior Minister Angelino Alfano said Wednesday. "There was an initial error of mistaking the part for the whole," said Alfano, leader of the New Centre Right party. He said that the "last judgment" for the government would only come in the next general election. Premier Matteo Renzi had staked his political future on the success of the referendum but has recently acknowledged he made a mistake in "personalising" the vote. The Constitutional reform turns the Senate into a leaner, regionally based body with fewer powers to save money and speed up decision-making.
