A thousand new cancer cases a day

Rate rising among women

Redazione Ansa

(ANSA) - Rome, September 27 - One thousand new cancer cases are diagnosed in Italy every day, with more women than men falling prey to the cell proliferation disease, the health ministry reported Tuesday.
While there are 485 cancer deaths every 24 hours the survival rate is improving, with over three million Italian cancer survivors, 27% of them in complete remission, according to Health Minister Beatrice Lorenzin. In 2016, 176,200 women were diagnosed with cancer (up from 168,900 in 2015), including 50,000 new cases of breast cancer (against 48,000 diagnosed in 2015). This was due to more screening programs as well as an increase in smoking, the ministry said.
There were 189,600 new diagnoses for men, down 2.5% over last year, with prostate cancer being the most common.
