Ex Calabria councillor names politicians

Interrogations address alleged role of FI Senator Antonio Caridi

Redazione Ansa

(ANSA) - Catanzaro, August 12 - Former Calabria regional councillor Alberto Sarra, in prison custody on suspicion of belonging to a secret 'Ndrangheta cupola that allegedly interacted systematically with police and institutions and picked "affiliates" for parliament, has twice in interrogations referred to a group of politicians including former regional governor Giuseppe Scopelliti, former secretary of state Giuseppe Valentino, ex MEP Umberto Pirilli and former MP and current mayor of Siderno, Pietro Fuda, local media reported Friday.
The Gazzetta del Sud published excerpts from the interrogation documents that allegedly include details of the relationship with Forza Italia Senator Antonio Caridi, one of the key suspects in the investigation.
Caridi and Sarra were among five people for whom arrest warrants were issued in mid-July. Caridi turned himself in to Rome's Rebibbia prison earlier this month after the Senate earlier voted in favor of stripping him of his parliamentary immunity.
The others were former Democratic Socialist MP Paolo Romeo, lawyer Giorgio De Stefano and Francesco Chirico.
