(ANSA) - Rome, June 24 - President Sergio Mattarella said
Friday Italy "intends to reaffirm the historic validity of the
European Union and its importance for the future of our youth"
in the wake of Britain's vote to leave the EU.
Mattarella spoke in Ljubljana on the margins of
celebrations for the 25th anniversary of Slovenia.
"We respect the results of the British referendum, albeit
with regret," Mattarella said.
"I am here with the presidents of the Austrian, German and
Croatian republics to celebrate the 25th anniversary of
Slovenia's foundation. We are here with countries that are our
friends. Especially today, we must stress how much we are bound
by our common European destiny".
