Hate-crime panel to be dedicated to slain Labour MP

(ANSA) - Rome, June 22 - The Lower House on Wednesday observed a minute's silence in memory of Jo Cox, the British Labour MP killed as she was campaigning against Brexit a week ago. Speaker Laura Boldrini commemorated Cox and said a House panel on hate crimes would be dedicated to her. "On June 16", Boldrini said, "British Labour MP Jo Cox was barbarically killed at Birstall, England, while she was upholding the ancient British parliamentary tradition of meeting voters to then convey their issues to parliament.
"Jo Cox would have turned 42 today.
"The intention of her killer, according to preliminary findings, was to strike down an MP strongly committed to campaigns for issues like peace, respect for human rights, the cause of refugees and migrants, gender parity, social inclusion and, above all, European integration".
Boldrini said that to honour Cox's memory, she would on July 4 propose dedicating the House panel to her.
