(ANSAmed) - Rome, May 3 - Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni told CNN Tuesday that the EU should make deals with African countries along the lines of the one it has made with Turkey to stem migrant flows.
He also said that, in Libya, the mistakes of five years ago should be averted.
"Without a stabilisation of Libya it will be very difficult to defeat Daesh (ISIS) and combat smuggling and migrations," he said, adding "we should not repeat the same mistakes we made five years ago".
Now that a national-unity government has been installed in Libya we must support stabilisation, he said, noting that on migration, "there is no easy solution but I think a solution is possible".
"What we should do," he said, "is what we have done on the Balkan route with Turkey. We should do the same with several African countries where migrations originate".
"European money can be invested to get deals with countries like Senegal, Ivory Coast, Nigeria and other African countries to cut the flow.
"We need the same effort on Africa and the centre of the Mediterranean that we had with Turkey for the Ballan route".
