Libya intervention only with parliament

Minister says Constitution will be respected

Redazione Ansa

(ANSA) - Rome, March 9 - Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni on Wednesday pledged that Italy would only be involved in a military mission in Libya if requested to by the North African country and if the Italian parliament approves. "We are working to respond to eventual security requests from the Libyan government, nothing more and nothing less," Gentiloni told the Senate, "with the full respect of the Constitution and only after approval by parliament". He added that the Italian government would not "let itself get dragged into adventures that are useless and dangerous for national security". "It's not sensible to bang drums but intervene if and when there is a request from a legitimate government," he said.
