India court hearing due on Italy marine

Italy says Latorre will not be going back to India

Redazione Ansa

(ANSA) - New Delhi, January 12 - India's Supreme Court will hold a hearing on Wednesday ahead of the expiry of the leave awarded to Massimiliano Latorre, one of two Italian marines accused of killing two Indian fishermen during an anti-piracy mission in 2012.
New Delhi allowed Latorre to return to Italy for health treatment after he had a stroke in 2014. The head of the Italian Senate's defence committee Nicola Latorre said on Tuesday that the marine would not return to India.
Italy has taken the case, which has been subject to a long series of delays and caused considerable diplomatic friction between the countries, to international arbitration.
The hearing at the supreme court is due to take place on Wednesday afternoon, and it will take into account an order by the Hamburg-based sea-law court for both countries to stop legal action.
The other marine, Salvatore Girone, is not permitted to leave India. Italian Senator Latorre said work was being done on the possibility of requesting his return to Italy as well.
