(ANSA) - Rome, September 10 - The interior ministry is set to
cut 23 prefectures, taking the total from 103 to 80, according
to a plan sent to trade unions Thursday.
The move, which spared immediate protests from
public-sector trade unions, is part of efforts to cut the costs
of government and the civil service in Italy.
The following prefectures will get the chop:
Teramo (incorporated into L'Aquila), Chieti (incorporated into
Pescara), Vibo Valentia (incorporated into Catanzaro), Benevento
(Avellino), Piacenza (Parma), Pordenone (Udine), Rieti
(Viterbo), Savona (Imperia), Sondrio (Bergamo), Lecco (Como),
Cremona (Mantua), Lodi (Pavia), Fermo (Ascoli Piceno), Isernia
(Campobasso), Asti (Alessandria), Verbano-Cusio-Ossola (Novara),
Biella (Vercelli), Oristano (Nuoro), Enna (Caltanissetta),
Massa-Carrara (Lucca), Prato (Pistoia), Rovigo (Padua), Belluno
(Treviso).
