(ANSA) - Rome, August 31 - The Luxembourg EU rotating presidency on Monday announced that emergency talks will be held on September 14 to deal with the escalating migration crisis.
Interior ministers from France, Germany and Great Britain had called for the meeting and spoken about the need to adopt "immediate measures" such as so called 'hot spots' in Greece and Italy to identify and register migrants and asylum seekers.
Austria has begun expanding checks on lorries near its eastern borders, after Europe was shocked by the discovery of 71 dead migrants in a lorry near the border with Hungary.
A boat carrying migrants sank off Libya's Mediterranean coast, close to Khoms, (east of Tripoli) killing at least 37 people, a local Libyan official said on Sunday, the second such fatal accident within days.
The first killed more than 200 people.
Pope Francis launched an appeal to stop what he defined as "crimes that offend the whole family of humanity".
