Renzi signs anti-corruption law

(ANSA) - Rome, May 26 - Italian Premier Matteo Renzi on Tuesday signed a landmark anti-corruption bill tweeting that birds of ill omen known in Italian as "gufi" ('owls') have not prevented this landmark law, which is now set to be promulgated by President Sergio Mattarella.
    "Anti-corruption. Owls fly by, laws remain. Verba volant, scripta manent. #lavoltabuona (#this is it)", Renzi tweeted after signing the bill.
    Interior Minister Angelino Alfano called the fight against corruption "a top priority" and said the new law was "another step forward in the fight against corruption phenomena".
    "The increase in supervisory powers vested in the national authority and increased penalties for corruption offenses are tools that can only have a positive effect on the economy and society in general", Alfano said.
    The interior minister also quoted Pope Francis, calling those engaged in corruption "men of good manners but bad habits".
