EU migrant summit 'first step' - UNHCR

(ANSA) - New York, April 24 - The European Union's response to the migrant crisis in the Mediterranean is "a first step", United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres told the UN Security Council on Friday. "The desperation of the conflicts in Syria and Iraq drives thousands of refugees to risk their lives on the Mediterranean," he said. "I hope the response decided on (at the EU summit) yesterday in Brussels will be a first step towards effective collective action".
