(ANSA) - Rome, April 23 - The president of the national
pensions institute INPS on Thursday slammed the alleged failure
of successive governments to properly inform Italians of changes
to the pension system, thereby leading them to make "erroneous"
choices.
"For the last 20 years we have witnessed a kind of State
apathy," said Tito Boeri in reference to the alleged lack of
information for citizens concerning the 1995 so-called Dini
reform switching from an earnings-related to a
contribution-based pensions system.
"Over the course of six parliaments there has been no move
to imform citizens of the change," he continued.
This, Boeri said, was "extremely serious" as "contributors
have been induced to make erroneous choices".
The president of INPS also announced a transparency
operation starting May 1 under which young people and employed
workers can receive details of their accrued pension "in an
orange envelope" on prior request via internet.
"We will concentrate on 50-60 year olds starting June 1,"
Boeri added.
Separately Boeri warned Thursday of the dangers for society
of living on material assets alone.
"In the absence of economic growth there is the danger that
those with major assets can, through their exploitation, secure
higher levels of income than people who invest their whole lives
on their career," he said.
"A society that condemns itself to surviving on its assets
has no future. In this way the differences are perpetuated,"
Boeri added.
