(ANSA) Rome, March 27 - The National Magistrates Association (ANM) President, Rodolfo Sabelli, called Friday for a "radical" reform of statute-of-limitation laws in Italy's byzantine judicial system to stop timing-out of cases "becoming the objective of trials." To resolve the high number of cases timing out "one needs to intervene in a more radical way interrupting definitively the clock ticking even after the first level court judgement," Sabelli said.
His remarks were echoed by the secretary of the left-wing magistrates' lobby Magistratura democratica, Anna Canepa, who also urged "more courage" in the anti-corruption decree law being prepared by the government, so to reinforce "the effectiveness and deterrence in sanctions".
