Grasso bemoans delays in passing his corruption bill

Legislation still not approved two years after being presented

(ANSA) - Rome, March 25 - Senate Speaker Pietro Grasso on Wednesday bemoaned parliament's tardiness in approving an anti-corruption bill be presented over two years ago. "So many, too many, delays on corruption put democracy in danger," Grasso, who presented the bill shortly before being elected Speaker, told a conference organised by the parliamentary anti-mafia commission.
    Parties from various sides of the Italian political spectrum have been hit by a long series of graft scandals.
    "It's necessary to reduce the opportunities for crime created in part by chaotic legislation," added the former national chief anti-mafia prosecutor. "Good laws are necessary, but they are not sufficient. "It is necessary to go back to protecting the weakest. The political system cannot fail to address this. Today it is an ethical demand. It's our duty".
