Police escort needed over Jobs Act

Labour undersecretary assigned police escort over reforms

Redazione Ansa

(ANSA) - Bari, January 2 - Threats of violence over the Italian government's controversial labour reforms have meant a heightened security escort for Labour Undersecretary Teresa Bellanova, a newspaper reported Friday.
Bellanova's support for the Jobs Act reforms, a key measure for the government of Premier Matteo Renzi, led to the threats, the Gazzetta del Mezzogiorno newspaper reported.
As a result, she was assigned a police escort as an extra security measure.
No other details of the intimidation were disclosed in the report nor in another dispatch in the Nuovo Quotidiano di Puglia.
The Jobs Act has triggered widespread protests from organized labour, including leading trade union federation CGIL which organized a national general strike last month.
