Gentiloni warns of returning Jihadists

Risk higher as ISIS undergoes military defeat, says minister

(ANSA) Rome, December 19 - Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni cautioned Friday that dozens of Italian jihadists fighting with militant Islamist group ISIS could threaten Italy's security if they start coming home in the wake of military defeats.
"According to our intelligence services the Italian fighters active in these theatres are only dozens and not hundreds," the foreign minister told State broadcaster RAI.
"The return phenomenon ... paradoxically can multiply as the international coalition obtains results.
"Controls must be very, very serious," given that "to create threats against our security" it would be sufficient to have "isolated situations" or lone attackers, he added.
"Italy is luckily a country with brilliant intelligence services, very active law and order forces, and good international relations," Gentiloni said.
"This has often kept us away from risks compared to other countries but the concern and attention must be at a maximum at this moment".
