Ex Rome mayor Alemanno investigated in mafia probe

(ANSA) - Rome, December 2 - Former Rome Mayor Gianni Alemanno is among 37 people who are under investigation in a mafia probe that also led to 28 arrests on Tuesday, ANSA sources said. Alemanno, a former member of Silvio Berlusconi's now-defunct People of Freedom (PdL) party, is suspected of criminal association of a mafia nature, the sources said. Alemanno, now a member of the rightwing Brothers of Italy party, was Rome mayor from 2008 to 2013. He also served as agriculture minister under three-time premier Belusconi from 2001 to 2006.
    Carabinieri police on Tuesday conducted searches to seize documents from officers of the Rome city council and the Lazio regional government in relation to the probe.
