Padoan meets with premier, MPs

'Might extend tax postponement for flood-hit regions'

(ANSA) - Rome, November 19 - Economy Minister Pier Carlo Padoan met Wednesday with Premier Matteo Renzi to discuss the government's 2015 budget bill now before the Lower House budget committee.
The government is "well aware" of the need to earn back taxpayers' trust, said Padoan told Lower House MPs after the two-hour meeting.
Measures for a "clear and transparent" internal revenue service include a fiscal enabling law, user-friendly online tax returns, and "improving tax compliance" to prevent outright evasion, the minister said.
The government is weighing the extension of a tax postponement for flood-striken regions, said Padoan. Suspending taxes from October 10 to December 20 in those areas of the country is costing the government three billion euros, he said.
The government won't cancel the taxes altogether because it can't afford to and it wouldn't be fair to "those who have suffered similar situations in the past," Padoan said.
