(See related) (ANSA) - Genoa, October 30 - A protest by steelworkers that turned violent should be "taken very seriously" by the government, the head of the Italian Bishops' conference said Thursday.
The dramatic demonstration Wednesday by steelworkers from the city of Terni, who were protesting the sacking of nearly 600 workers, worsened when some clashed with police.
This demonstrates the tension so many people are feeling in the continued economic downturn and high unemployment in Italy, said Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco.
Such occurrences should "be taken very seriously" because these "express the concern and fear of so many people to lose their jobs and therefore to have the dignified survival of their families thrown into crisis," Bagnasco told reporters on the fringes of the inauguration of a homeless shelter.
