(ANSA) - Naples, October 30 - Baritone Sergio Valentino of the Teatro San Carlo ended a two-week hunger strike Thursday with a piece of chocolate after a regional court ordered the reinstatement of the Italian city's mayor.
After the court order came down, Mayor Luigi de Magistris embraced Valentino, who had refused to eat while the mayor was suspended on allegations of abuse of office during his time as a public prosecutor.
Valentino joined numerous other artists, who perform at Teatro San Carlo, in protesting the October 1 suspension of De Magistris over allegations of unwarranted wiretaps.
The Campania Regional Administrative Court (TAR) referred the matter to the Constitutional Court, restoring de Magistris, to office pending the outcome.
De Magistris, who denies any wrongdoing, is currently the target of a fresh probe into tampering with the America's Cup which took place in the southern Italian city last year.
News that his appeal was ruled admissible was greeted with applause and shouts of joy at his office in city hall, where councillors crowded to congratulate him.
