Tourists throwing 'return to Rome' coins into Roman Forum

Area below Capitol littered with change like Trevi Fountain

(ANSA) - ROME, JAN 13 - Tourists have started throwing 'return to Rome' coins into the Roman Forum, mimicking the tradition at the Trevi Fountain, officials said Saturday.
The area below the Campidoglio (Capitol) perch overlooking the iconic site is now littered with one and two euro coins and small change in other currencies, they said.
Officials say more and more tourists have been seen turning their back to the Forum and throwing a coin over their shoulder, as is done at the Trevi Fountain.
The traditional belief that throwing a coin into the Trevi Fountain guarantees a safe return to the Eternal City dates back centuries.
Visitors to the fountain have recently begun to swipe their credit cards on the edges of the famous monument. (ANSA).
