Work starts to save St Mark's Basilica

(ANSA) - Venice, May 24 - Work started Thursday to save St Mark's Basilica in Venice from acqua alta, when the lagoon city floods with water.
    A system of underground run-off channels regulated by valves will keep the mosaic-covered entrance to the storied church dry.
    Currently it floods even with medium-height acqua alta.
