(ANSA) - Venice, May 24 - Work started Thursday to save St
Mark's Basilica in Venice from acqua alta, when the lagoon city
floods with water.
A system of underground run-off channels regulated by valves
will keep the mosaic-covered entrance to the storied church dry.
Currently it floods even with medium-height acqua alta.
