Fees for Venice tourism proposed

Harry's Bar owner slams tourist attitudes to lagoon city

(ANSA) - Venice, August 13 - Tourists should have to pay to visit Venice to help to stem damage caused by overcrowding and littering, the owner of the city's famous Harry's Bar said on Thursday.
Arrigo Cipriani told La Nuova di Venezia newspaper that a tourist payment system on Freedom Bridge, which connects Venice to the mainland, was the only solution he saw to counter growing problems in the lagoon city.
"Venetians get to pass for free, everyone else has to pay something," he proposed, slamming the way tourists behave while visiting the city.
"Everyone feels they have a right to make a mess: tourists see that the city is disgusting and so they don't feel bad about adding their bit," he said.
He also said he was shocked by recent tourist behaviour after one man was captured on cell phone cameras jumping nude into the Grand Canal.
