Yarn made out of recycled plastic bottles

(by Stefania Fumo) (ANSA) - Rome, November 7 - Max Mara's Weekend collection has launched a line in a made-in-Italy eco-friendly textile made out of recycled plastic, sources at the Italian fashion house said Friday. The fabric comes from Newlife, which manufactures a complete range of high-performance yarns that are 100% certified recycled from post-consumption plastic bottles, which are collected and transformed entirely in Italy.
The transformation process is mechanical, not chemical, and is environmentally sustainable because it uses 94% less water and 60% less energy, and generates 32% less CO2 emissions than regular yarn manufacturing processes, company sources said.
Newlife yarns can be used in casual apparel, lingerie, sportswear, luggage, labels and ribbons, automotive textiles, and furnishings for home interiors and exteriors.
Max Mara has chosen to use this unique product to create apparel in an environmentally responsible way in its Weekend collection, which includes outerwear, knitwear, dresses, shirts, jeans, and accessories.
In this way the fashion house founded by Achille Maramotti in 1951 reconfirms its identity as a trailblazer. Maramotti was the precursor of the current concept of ready-to-wear because he was among the first in the field to envision how industrial processes could support the production of high-quality designer clothing, in a period in which fashion was thought of solely as an artisanal activity.
Over the years, designers for the Max Mara brand have included some among the most important future names in fashion, such as Dolce & Gabbana, Karl Lagerfeld, and Narciso Rodriguez, a favorite of American First Lady Michelle Obama.
