(ANSA) - Pompeii, December 24 - Premier Matteo Renzi and Culture Minister Dario Franceschini visited six restored domus at Pompeii on Thursday ahead of their official opening to the public. Renzi and Franceschini visited the restored Fullonica di Stephanus, Casa del Criptoportico, Casa di Paquius Proculus, Casa del Sacerdos Amandus, Casa di Fabius Amandio and Casa dell'Efebo in the ancient Roman city destroyed in the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. Renzi then declined the offer of coffee from site staff, saying he had to get home to celebrate Christmas with his family. The domus restorations were carried out under the 105-million euro Great Pompeii Project funded by the European Commission and aimed at safeguarding the unique UNESCO World Heritage site.
From December 26 to January 10 (closed January 1) visitors can view the restored domus and other parts of the excavations that are not normally open to the public on two new guided tours organised by the local culture company SCABEC.
