(ANSA) - Milan, August 31 - Israel is the fifth country in the world for per capita consumption of fruit, vegetables and legumes according to speakers at a conference held Monday at the Israel pavilion of Milan Expo 2015. Israeli consumption of junk food was reported to be relatively low.
The conference was entitled Sport and Nutrition Week: Food for Life - Physical Activity for Health, and moderated by Lior Many, a sports nutritionist and an expert on Active Health at Work.
"According to research by the University of Cambridge published by the Lancet Global Health, Israel is the first industrialised country in the ranking on the quality of food," said Many.
Israel took ninth place worldwide, after Chad, Sierra Leone, Mali, Gambia, Uganda, Ghana, Ivory Coast and Senegal. "Israel is the fifth country in the world for per capita consumption of fruit, vegetables and legumes, while the consumption of junk food is relatively low," Many continued.
"Here Mediterranean cuisine marries the flavours of the Middle East and Africa, but also traditions and cultures from around the world. These conditions have created an evolving gastronomic biodiversity, a creative landscape that forms taste from natural ingredients.
"Attention to the physical fitness of the Israelis and an efficient infrastructure and public gyms for outdoor activities complete the picture," Many concluded.
The meeting ended with an Israeli brunch, naturally based largely on fruit. Ride and Puree, an exhibit dedicated to the combination of correct nutrition and sports activity, went on show for two days.
