(ANSA) - ROME, FEB 28 - Humanitarian rescue ship Sea Eye 4 was Wednesday morning navigating towards Porto Empedocle carrying 53 migrants and refugees and two dead bodies following a rescue operation in international waters in the Maltese search and rescue zone on Tuesday.
One person rescued by the German NGO vessel was helicopter-lifted to Malta for medical treatment, while three others, all from Bangladesh, who were also in serious medical condition were subsequently disembarked in Lampedusa.
Reports said they could be transferred by helicopter to hospital in Palermo or Agrigento on mainland Sicily following preliminary medical examination.
The migrant hotspot on the tiny stepping-stone island between north Africa and Italy is currently empty.
