(ANSA) - ROME, FEB 6 - Vandals have attacked speed cameras in Calabria and Umbria in apparent emulations of several acts of criminal damage in northern Italy by an anonymous vandal nicknamed "Fleximan".
In the Calabrian town of Palmi, a recently installed speed camera was set alight on the night between Sunday and Monday, according to reports on local newspapers.
Palmi Mayor Giuseppe Ranuccio said the attack on the device monitoring a stretch of road with a 50km/h speed limit, with fines of between 40 and 170 euros for going above, was "brutal and uncivilized".
A speed camera along the via Flaminia close to Spoleto, in an area where the speed limit is 90 km/h, was knocked down.
Fleximan, who has been sawing the poles that speed cameras are mounted on, has been hailed as a 'super hero' by some motorists in posts on social media. (ANSA).
