(ANSA) - ROME, SEP 24 - A 77-year-old woman was in critical
condition in hospital in Treviso in the northern region of
Veneto on Sunday after being stabbed by her husband, aged 74.
The man then turned himself in to Carabinieri police and has
been placed under arrest for aggravated attempted murder.
Italy has seen a recent spate of acts of gender-based violence
including femicides and rape, including by minors.
On Friday the Council of Europe said that it was worried about
Italy's figures regarding violence against women.
The human rights body's Committee of Ministers said that it
"notes with concern" that the data provided by Rome "show a
persistently high percentage of domestic and sexual violence
proceedings shelved at the preliminary investigation stage, the
limited use of protection orders and a significant rate of
violations of them". (ANSA).
