(ANSA) - ROME, AUG 31 - Works should have started only after the train that hit and killed five railway workers at Brandizzo station near Turin late on Wednesday night had passed, state railway company Ferrovie dello Stato (FS) said on Thursday.
"As far as the speed of the train is concerned, the conditions of the line allowed it to reach a maximum speed of 160 km/h in that section," said FS in its online newspaper FS News.
"The issue is different: according to procedures, the works should have started only after the train had passed," it added.
Earlier in the day, Brandizzo Mayor Paolo Bodoni said after talking to workmen present at the station that there may have been an error of communication between the team of workers that was hit and those responsible for coordinating the works.
