(ANSA) - ROME, MAR 29 - A big fire at a solvents factory on the outskirts of the northern city of Novara on Wednesday has caused an alarm about the possible spread of toxic fumes.
Novara Mayor Alessandro Canelli told local people to keep their windows closed and not to go out "unless absolutely necessary".
The fire at the premises of Kemi company at the San Pietro Mosezzo industrial park generated a big black cloud.
The regional environmental protection agency ARPA has started to run tests on the air quality in the area.
Around 50 people work at the plant and around 30 were on site when the fire broke out.
They all managed to get out safely, sources said.
"An entire warehouse exploded. Everything is burned," said a woman in the square outside the factory in a video posted by Novara City Councillor Giuseppe Gagliardi. (ANSA).
