Italian banking system solid says Giorgetti

'In contact with authorities, problems lie elsewhere'

(ANSA) - ROME, MAR 25 - Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti on Saturday reassured savers that the government is monitoring the situation on the markets amid ongoing contagion fears following the recent collapse of US banks and concerns over Credit Suisse but insisted that the Italian banking system "appears solid".
"The problems lie elsewhere," said the minister on the sidelines of the swearing-in of Finance Police officer cadets in Bergamo.
"Of course, we do not overlook the fact that in a global market like the financial one, contagion can spread," he continued.
Consequently, Giorgetti said the government was in "constant contact" with the supervisory authorities" and giving "what is right to give as a government", namely "a sign of confidence and security to savers".
"The government is always ready to take measures," continued the minister, adding however that the problems seen "for example in Switzerland with Credit Suisse concern cases that are not typical of Italian banks".
"For this reason right now there are no signs of concern," he concluded. (ANSA).
