(ANSA) - ROME, MAR 24 - The Council of Europe's anti-torture committee said Friday Italy's prisons are "violent" and "overcrowded" following a periodic visit carried out in March/April 2022.
In its report the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CPT) recorded violence and intimidation among inmates and overcrowding in all penal institutions.
During the visit, the CPT delegation examined the treatment and conditions of detainees in four prison establishments in Italy .
The report reiterates earlier calls for the abolition of daytime solitary confinement and a review of the management of inmates subject to the tough "41-bis" regime, which is normally reserved for mafia bosses.
The Council of Europe is also asking for improved living conditions for prisoners and specific measures for women and transgender people in prison. (ANSA).
