(ANSA) - ROME, MAR 17 - Premier Giorgia Meloni cried during a meeting at Palazzo Chigi on Thursday with survivors and relatives of the victims of the February 26 shipwreck off Steccato di Cutro in Italy's southern Calabria region, a survivor present at the meeting said on Friday.
The man, from Syria, described the prime minister as very "emotionally charged".
"She asked us about our sufferings and when we told her she started to cry. She really took part. Anyone who wanted to tell their story was able to do so," he said.
86 refugees and migrants are known to have died in the shipwreck, which occurred after a fishing boat thought to be carrying around 180 people mainly from Afghanistan, Syria and Iran ran aground and broke up in shallow water near the coast after four days' sailing from Turkey.
80 people survived the tragedy, while around 20 people are still thought to be missing, feared dead. (ANSA).
