(ANSA) - ROME, FEB 8 - A 29-year-old Chechen man got 23 years in jail in absentia Tuesday for beating to death 21-year-old Florentine man Niccolò Ciatti outside a Spanish disco in August 2017.
Rome prosecutors had requested life for Rassoul Bissoultanov, who went on the lam last August after being sentenced to 15 years by a Spanish court for the same crime.
A Rome assizes court convicted Bissoultanov of murder in the fight in Lloret de Mar but ruled out aggravating circumstances, which is why he was not sentenced to life in jail.
Ciatti's father Luigi said after the sentence was read out Tuesday evening: "It is certainly not the life sentence we thought would come for this murderer.
"It is certainly a more significant sentence than the one that was imposed in Spain. I think the court recognised mitigating factors that I honestly understand little about. What Bissoultanov did to Niccolò I think is of a unique cruelty." (ANSA).
