(ANSA) - ROME, FEB 1 - A convicted hitman for the Calabria-based 'Ndrangheta mafia escaped from house arrest near Milan on the night of Monday January 30, police sources said Wednesday.
Massimiliano Sestito, 52, is believed to have deactivated his electronic ankle bracelet before skipping detention at his home at Pero.
Sestito, an affiliate of the Calabrian Mob in Catanzaro, has been convicted of two murders.
He carried out a hit on a young Carabiniere, Renato Lio, in 1991, and killed a boss, Vincenzo Femia, in 2013.
He had been released from a Terni prison on January 12 while serving a sentence for double murder, the remainder of which he was supposed to see out under house arrest.
'Ndrangheta is Italy's richest and most powerful mafia, controlling much of the European cocaine trade. (ANSA).
