Cutting Trojan use in civil service crimes wd hit Mob fight

Many Mafia probes stem from public admin cases says Melillo

(ANSA) - ROME, JAN 31 - Cutting police ability to use Trojan horses in their fight against crimes against the civil service would undermine the State's battle against the Mafia, national anti-mafia prosecutor Giovanni Melillo told the Senate justice committee Tuesday.
Melillo said restricting such use was part of Justice Minister Carlo Nordio's plans to rein in the salacious publication of wiretaps of innocent people, a charge Nordio has denied.
"Reducing the possibility of using trojans in crimes against the public administration would also undermine investigations against organised crime," Melillo told the Upper House panel, which heard him as part of its fact-finding investigation into wiretapping.
Many mafia investigations "arise from those on public administration", Melillo explained, repeating a claim that lesser crimes that lead to Mob probes would be hurt by Nordio's plans.
And referring to the cases of municipalities dissolved for mafia reasons, the anti-mafia prosecutor added: "we should also think in terms of the resilience of democracy". (ANSA).
