(ANSA) - ROME, JAN 26 - A wolf was found trapped in a canal in the centre of Verona on Wednesday and will now be re-released into the wild, forest rangers said Thursday.
The exhausted animal, which was at first mistaken for a dog, was found lying on a bed of fig branches in the water course.
Fire fighters had to cut through a cement barrier to get to it and place it in a cage.
The wolf will be treated for any injuries and then put back into the wild on the mountains of Lessinia north of Verona, where it is believed to have come from.
Fire brigade sources said they rescued some 242 animals in the province of Verona last year. (ANSA).
