(ANSA) - ROME, JAN 17 - An Italian businessman and former politician said Tuesday he was sorry that he had made a delivery rider do a 50 km round-trip to get him his takeaway dinner in the middle of January.
The young rider had to complete a 45-50 km journey to get Andre Bassi his burger and fries in the province of Verona, the Gazzettino newspaper reported.
Bassi, a former regional councillor for the rightwing League and Brothers of Italy partes, said "it's not a major surprise to me but I have been personally touched by the plight of these poor young men.
"It was the first time I had used the app. I was ignorant, but now I've become aware and I'm sorry." The former councillor, who lives in Bussolengo, said on Facebook: "I thought about it all night. I asked myself: why did this poor wretch have to suffer to bring a burger and fries to my house? "Practically, he rode 40 or 50 kilometres, round trip. My blood ran cold. I even asked him if he wanted to come in and warm up a bit but he told me he didn't have time, that he had t rush away to make other deliveries.".
Bassi said he had decided not to use the delivery app again "until I see a change; I will not help perpetuate this exploitation". (ANSA).
