(ANSA) - ROME, AUG 22 - Some five people were saved by dog life guards on beaches in Lazio and Sicily in the central week of August, the Italian Canine Lifeguard School (SICS) said at the weekend.
Two youths aged 12 and 19 were rescued by dogs Robin Hood and Zeus on the beach at Giardini Naxos last Saturday, SICS said.
They swam out after a football that had been driven out to sea by the wind and swiftly found themselves in a current that was sucking them out too.
Robin Hood, a four-year-old Golden Retriever, and Zeus, a six-year-old Newfoundland, sprang into action and saved the boys after their mother called for help.
At Montalto di Castro near VIterbo, on the same day, two sisters from Arezzo aged 12 and 15 were rescued by Pedro, a seven-year-old Holden Retriever, and Mira, a six-year-old Honey Labrador, to the applause of the assembled bathers.
The doggie heroes also saved a 52-year-old local woman who had been sucked into the same 'hole' in the water earlier in the day. (ANSA).
