Antitrust fines UnipolSai, Generali 5 mn each

'Misleading and aggressive conduct' over car insurance

Redazione Ansa

(ANSA) - ROME, AUG 9 - Italy's Antitrust Authority on Tuesday fined Italian insurers UnipolSai Assicurazioni and Generali Italia five million euros each for unfair commercial practices in paying out damages on car insurance policies, the authority said.
The authority said it had decided to levy the maximum fine "in consideration of the seriousness and duration of the practice", which it said breached Italy's consumer protection code.
It said the two insurance giants "made it hard for customers to gain access to the accident file and omitted significant information on the amount of reimbursement or on its refusal".
The authority cited "misleading and aggressive conduct".
Consumer groups said the fine was too small while the insurers said they would appeal saying they had done nothing wrong.
