(ANSA) - ROME, AUG 1 - A day of mourning will be held in the home town of Giulia and Alessia Pisanu, two sisters aged 17 and 15 who were hit and killed by a high-speed train at Riccione train station early on Sunday, the mayor said on Monday.
Carlo Gubellini, the mayor of Castenaso, in the province of Bologna, said the day of mourning will take place on the day of the girls' funeral.
It is not clear why the girls were crossing the tracks early on Sunday in the station of the Adriatic seaside city.
Eye-witnesses said that one of the girls died trying to save the other.
"It's a very difficult moment," said Gubellini.
"The whole community is suffering a great deal because of this tragedy.
"The girls were well known. They came into town with their group of friends.
"It's hitting people hard because it is a small, united community.
"They were full of vitality and had a great desire to live life.
"We cannot understand how this could have happened". (ANSA).
