Elderly couple commit suicide, 'sect' suspected

Man, 67, and woman, 65, near Forlì 'believed in Apocalypse'

(ANSA) - ROME, MAY 23 - An elderly couple committed suicide near Forlì in Romagna Sunday and a ritual linked to their suspected membership of a cult is suspected.
The couple, in their 60s, left a note saying they wanted to find "a place to live in peace" before shooting themselves in the head in their second home in the Apennines.
Police think they may have been members of a sect that preached belief in the Apocalypse and End Times, first linked to the Mayan Prophecy of 2012 and recently resurgent due to the war in Ukraine.
The victims were named as Paolo Neri and Stefania Platania, aged 67 and 65, both former employees at the Italian Senat in Rome.
