State paid out 25.5 mn in 2021 for unjust-detention cases

(ANSA) - ROME, MAY 18 - The Italian State paid out damages of 24,506,190 euros in 2021 in relation to people being unjustly held in preventative incarceration before trial, said a report presented to parliament by the justice ministry on Wednesday.
    The damages regarded 565 cases of unjust detention.
    The figure of just over 24.5 million euros was around 12 million lower than in 2020.
    The average payment in 2021 was 43,374 euros, compared to 49,278 euros the previous year.
    The report said disciplinary cases had been opened against 50 judges over people being released from jail beyond the time laid down by the law in he 2019-2021 period.
    It said none of those cases had led to rulings against the judges, although in 27 the process had not been completed.
