(ANSA) - ROME, JAN 27 - The number of new COVID-19 cases in
Italy dropped in the period between January 19 and 25 for the
first time in 13 weeks, according to the weekly monitoring
report of the GIMBE medical foundation, which was released on
Thursday.
It said there were 1,197,970 new cases in that period, down 3.7%
from the 1,243,789 registered the week before.
The report said the number of COVID patients in Italy's ordinary
hospital wards rose 3% from 19,448 to 20,037 but the number in
intensive care dropped 1.4% from 1,715 to 1,691.
It said Italy registered 2,519 COVID deaths in the period in
question, up 11.2% on the 2,266 recorded the previous week.
The report said the number of people having their first dose of
a COVID vaccine dropped by 30.9% in the January 19-25 period.
It added that 96,957 over-50s got their first jab over the last
week, down 25.5% with respect to the previous seven days.
The government has made it obligatory for over-50s to be
vaccinated for the coronavirus by mid-February. (ANSA).
