(ANSA) - ROME, JAN 14 - The government has banned hunting, fishing, and collecting truffles and mushrooms in many parts of northern Italy due to an outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF).
The ban regards the territories of 114 towns, 78 in Piedmont and 36 in Liguria.
The measure also halts trekking, mountain biking and any activity that could lead to direct or indirect contact with infected boars in these areas.
ASF is a highly contagious viral disease of domestic and wild pigs, whose mortality rate can reach 100%. It is not a danger to human health, but it can have devastating effects on farming.
There is currently no effective vaccine against ASF. (ANSA).
