(ANSA) - ROME, DEC 6 - The first case of the COVID-19 new variant of concern Omicron has been confirmed in Sardinia, a Sassari hospital said after sequencing the strain Monday.
    The new more infectious variant was found in a traveller who had just come back from South Africa, it said.
    Passengers who shared a Rome.-Alghero flight with the passenger are set to have a second COVID test after coming up negative in a first one.
    They are in precautionary quarantine.
    So far Italy has had one small Omicron cluster at Caserta, home of a businessman who recently returned from southern Africa, and other smaller ones in a handful of places around the country.
