Climate: Italy's greenhouse emissions up 4.8% this year

(ANSA) - ROME, DEC 3 - Italy's greenhouse gas emissions are set to be up 4.8% this year with respect to 2020, the Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA) said on Friday.
    It said the rise reflected a recovery in economic activity following the slump caused by the COVID-19 pandemic last year.
    Italy's GDP is set to rise by over 6% this year after falling by 8.9% in 2020.
    ISPRA said Italy's greenhouse emissions for 2021 will be down by 4.2% with respect to the pre-pandemic year of 2019.
    Global greenhouse emissions must to start coming down in a major way over by the end of the decade for the target of limiting global heating to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels o be met, experts say.
    G20 countries, such as Italy, are responsible for the overwhelming majority of the world's greenhouse emissions.
    Although they have contributed relatively little to the climate crisis, many of the world's poorest countries are being hit first and worst by its effects, experts say. (ANSA).
